ADJACENT PLAY SPACE

ADJACENT PLAY SPACE
Installation, 2019

This installation is part of my Final Year Project that explores ways in enhancing experiences through play. The aim is to bring about playfulness in adults with benefits such as stress relief and social skills; to allow for relaxation and “escapism” from their daily busy schedule. The adjacency of the installation located right in front of Ocean Financial Centre allows for that to those using or passing-by.
Enhancing their experience on what they deem as escapism / leisure in Raffles Place is key rather than physical play

SITE
The idea of play was developed to support how Raffles Place has hints of play around; such as swings, sculptures, colourful reflective ceiling, and picnic benches. However because of the placement and scale, it is not well utilized. The area outside Ocean Financial Centre is where people get opportunities to meet each other, and have a slower pace compared to the rest of Raffles Place. Most adults seem comfortable in their own zones; using their phones, talking to their friends and looking around. Hence, play in this project would more “private” rather than physical play.

MODELS
Lleft to right: (Bruno Munari inspired) Geometry shapes, Coloured tunnel for sitting and standing, Pods for sitting, exploration of heights, Path that allows for multiple directions
(Alexander Calder inspired) Movement
Models made were inspired by Bruno Munari’s geometrical shapes and Alexander Calder’s theory of the relation between things.
Models inspired by Bruno Munari has intentions of creating private spaces for the adults to be in, while the one inspired by Alexander Calder was on interactivity and relations; creating a sound when the yellow stick moves. Visual play was explored by how much one can see through, its interactivity, and effects.

INSTALLATION
Although there is a slower pace under this coloured glass shelter, the existing circulation is very directed. The installation is designed around the circulation so that it does not seem like an obstacle. To build on Alexander Calder’s theory on relationship between things, “private-ness” is not expressed through capsule like boundaries but rather how it could embrace the openness of the space.
The movement of those interacting with the installation corresponds to the relation with their surroundings.
1. Upon walking through the tunnel, there are some visual play where one starts to see more of the exterior.
 2. Having natural lighting, there can be a play of reflecting colours. These shapes hanging are interactive installations that can be converted into seating when being pulled down or rotated. This might make one feel more comfortable as they are able to adjust whats around them for a certain private physical boundary.
3.The movement of the installation being used or how some parts move can be deem as visual play to those sitting nearby or passer-bys.
